Getting Life's Priorities Straight

PDF version of this teachingPDF version of this teaching

How many times has someone told you - "you'd better get your priorities straight"!

What did they mean?

If you were a school student it was probably your parents or teacher saying it in reference to doing yourhomework versus hanging out with your friends. When you were a little older and perhaps in college or university then it was probably the professor saying it in reference to your career ambitions versus your attention span in his lecture room.

As an adult, we may have heard our boss say that in reference to certain projects or job related activities in which we had to make a choice in a time or money sensitive situation.

Nearly every aspect of life requires us at some time to set
priorities - to determine what is the best thing to do or what is the first thing to do or what is the most important thing to do.

What about Christians? What about married Christians?

The Bible has a lot to say about how God expects us to live and what priorities we need to set in our family and home, our community, our job, our finances and our fellowship with other Christians.

Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 10:12-13" ... what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires you to fear Him, live according to His will, to love and worship Him with all your heart and soul and to obey the Lord's commands ..."

And in Joshua24:15, Joshua said " ... choose today whom you will serve ... as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD."

There is no question that the number ONE priority for any Christian is to PUT GOD FIRST

... first in everything. He must be first with our time, first with our talents and first with our treasure.

Jesus said as recorded in Matthew 6:33 "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God ..." If He is put first, then it doesn't matter what is second or third or fourth.

All other things come under this first priority. We do need to have structure in our lives based on God's priorities. Depending on factors such as age, marriage status, employment and even health, priorities can and must change but never to the detriment of removing God from His number one position.
